When buying or selling on SilkyRoad.net, it’s helpful to understand certain important terms that affect how listings and transactions work. Below is a breakdown of key concepts like Reserve Price, Bids, Offers, and how they apply to both auction and classified listings.
What Is a Reserve Price?
The reserve price is the minimum amount a seller is willing to accept in an auction. It’s the price that must be met—or exceeded—before the seller is obligated to complete the sale.
If a bid meets or exceeds the reserve, the highest bid at the end of the auction will win the listing.
If a bid is below the reserve, it will not win, even if no higher bid is placed.
Sellers can choose to keep their reserve price private.
Whether shown or hidden, the reserve must be equal to or greater than the starting price of the auction.
Reserves can be set as low as $1.
If the reserve hasn’t been met, the listing will display a notice and the current price will appear in red.
If the reserve is met, the price will appear in green, and a note will confirm that the listing is now set to be sold to the highest bidder.
Bids vs Offers: What’s the Difference?
In auctions, buyers place bids with the goal of outbidding others and meeting or exceeding the reserve.
In classified listings, buyers submit offers, which are private proposals to the seller. Sellers can choose to accept, counter, or reject any offer.
Classified Listings show an Asking Price, which is a starting point for offers. It’s set by the seller and used as a guide during negotiations.
If an auction ends without a sale, it enters a post-auction negotiation phase, similar to a classified listing. The price displayed in this phase is called the Indicative Price.
The Indicative Price reflects the highest bid from the auction and serves as a reference point for offers.
During post-auction negotiations, buyers can click “Make Offer” to propose a new price to the seller.
