Clicking Buy It Now on a fixed-price listing sends the seller an offer at their asking price. It does not buy the listing or reserve it for you.
Clicking Buy It Now on a normal fixed-price listing does not buy it. It sends the seller an offer at their asking price, and the seller has to accept it. Only then do you pay.
So if you clicked Buy It Now and nothing seemed to happen, that is usually the system working correctly — you are waiting for the seller.
This genuinely is confusing, and it is worth checking which kind of listing you are looking at:
| Listing type | What Buy It Now does |
|---|---|
| Classified (fixed price) | Sends the seller an offer at the asking price. Nothing is bought or reserved |
| Auction | Ends the auction immediately and makes you the winner |
| Notification | What it means |
|---|---|
| Offer Accepted | The seller accepted. A payment deadline follows — pay by the date given or the sale is cancelled and the listing returns to the market |
| Offer Declined | The seller rejected your offer |
| Counter Offer Received | The seller has proposed a different price. You can accept it or negotiate further |
| Offer Closed | The seller accepted someone else's offer. Yours is closed — the listing was never reserved for you |
| Nothing at all | The seller has not responded yet. Your offer expires after 7 days |
Because a classified listing stays available until the seller accepts someone, the useful thing you can do is make it easy for the seller to say yes — message them through the listing to confirm you are ready to proceed. See Messaging a buyer or seller for the first time.
For how payment works once your offer has been accepted, see Paying for Your Purchase.
